The TrailSplits route planner lets you create hiking, trail running, cycling, and mountain biking routes directly in your browser. Click on the map to place waypoints, and the planner calculates a path between them along mapped trails and roads, with a preference for unpaved paths when you ask for it.
Every route includes a detailed elevation profile with colour-coded gradient zones. See exactly where the steep climbs and descents are, along with total elevation gain, loss, and estimated moving time based on your chosen activity type and pace.
The planner analyses surface types along your route - asphalt, gravel, dirt, rock - and rates the effort as Easy, Moderate, Hard or Epic from distance and climb. Where the map does not record a surface, the route says so rather than guessing. This helps you choose the right shoes and prepare for the terrain you will encounter.
Download your route as a GPX file and import it into a GPS device, watch or app that reads GPX - Garmin, Coros and Suunto among them; an Apple Watch needs a navigation app that opens GPX files. The GPX includes the full route geometry with an elevation on every point, named waypoints and the file's original points of interest.
Before you head out, preview your route with a cinematic 3D flyover. The camera follows the trail using real terrain data, giving you a bird's-eye view of the landscape, ridgelines, and valleys along the way.
