Read the full course description
Two identical laps of about 21.1 km from the open-air grounds of Messe Freiburg at Neuer Messplatz, on a course the organizer lists as certified. Each lap leaves the exhibition grounds through the Seepark at km 2 and the Dietenbachpark at km 5, passes the western and southern districts of Weingarten, Haslach and St. Georgen to reach Wiehre around km 12, follows the Dreisam at km 15 into the historic Altstadt beside the Muenster at km 16, crosses the Wiwilibruecke, the pedestrian bridge in the race logo, at km 17 and returns through Stuehlinger and Bruehl to the Messe, where the marathon field turns onto the second lap and finishes at km 42. The organizer calls the course flat to gently rolling with about 200 m of climb over the whole marathon and no major hills, on asphalt, cobblestones and paving stones; the embedded lap map shows about 56 m of gain per lap. In 2026 water and refreshment stations alternated roughly every 2.5 km, with food at km 5, 10, 15 and 21 of each lap, gels at km 15 and pacers from 3:15 to 5:00.

Three decisions to make before race day
Collect your bib on Friday or Saturday, not on race morning
Sunday pickup opens at 07:30, only 90 minutes before the gun, and serves every distance, so collect on Friday or Saturday or send a proxy. Trams stop in the inner city from about 09:00 to 15:00.
More detail
Sunday pickup in Halle 3 opens at 07:30, only 90 minutes before the 09:00 gun, and the desk serves every Sunday distance; the organizer recommends Friday 15:00 to 19:00 or Saturday 09:00 to 18:00, or a proxy with the power of attorney on the confirmation. The bib gives free RVF public transport on the Sunday from three hours before the event, but the inner city is closed to trams from about 09:00 to 15:00, so a race-morning journey has to reach the Messe before the closures.
Declare the right finish time before 21 March 2027
Your declared finish time sets block B (09:00) or C (09:10), fixed after 21 March 2027. If the limit is a fixed 14:45 clock, block C has ten minutes less, so a runner near the limit should aim for block B.
More detail
Block B at 09:00 or block C at 09:10 is assigned automatically from the finish time declared at entry, printed on the bib and fixed after 21 March 2027, with no guarantee that running partners land in the same block. If the 5 h 45 limit turns out to be a fixed 14:45 clock, block C starts with ten minutes less, so a runner near the limit should declare a time that places them in block B.
Pace the first lap to leave margin for the second pass
Both laps are identical, so the Altstadt cobbles around km 16 return at about km 37. Check your clock against 14:45 at the lap change at the Messe; the slowest 2026 pacer ran 5:00.
More detail
The two laps are identical, so the cobbles and paving stones of the Altstadt around km 16 come again at about km 37 and the organizer's 200 m of climb is spread evenly over both laps. The slowest pacer group in 2026 ran 5:00 against a 5 h 45 limit, and with stations only every 2.5 km on the 2026 pattern the lap transition at the Messe is the natural place to check the clock against 14:45.

Direct online entry is open at a single 80 euro price with no lottery and no waiting list, and about 45 percent of marathon places were still free on the check date; late entry adds 13 euro at the desk in Halle 3 on 2 to 4 April 2027 while places remain, and the minimum age is 18. The start block is assigned automatically from the finish time declared at entry and cannot be changed after 21 March 2027, when bibs are printed. Bibs are collected at Messe Freiburg, Halle 3, on Friday 15:00 to 19:00, Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 or Sunday from 07:30 against the confirmation or an identity card, and a proxy may collect with the power of attorney printed on the confirmation. Race-day pickup therefore exists, but the organizer recommends Friday or Saturday to avoid the Sunday queue.
