What to expect on the course

  • On the 2026 course, the highest ground is about 456 m near Jussy at km 12 to 13
  • Halfway in Thônex, then Chêne-Bourg around km 22, the first cut-off
  • A drop of about 50 m to the lake between km 32 and 34, then flat quays into the city
  • Across the river just below the lake near km 39, then a short loop through the Pâquis
  • About 160 m of climb over the whole course, all of it in the first 32 km

The map follows the organizer's 2026 course file matched to the streets, including its short Puplinge out-and-back; the 2027 route is not yet published and the race page still names Chemin Frank-Thomas rather than the 2026 start on Route de Frontenex.

Read the full course description

A point-to-point road course on asphalt that the organizer calls a single loop, measured to Swiss Athletics and World Athletics rules, with the start and finish about 1.9 km apart. On the 2026 file the field leaves Route de Frontenex on the Frontenex plateau, runs east through Chene-Bougeries and along the Seymaz to Vandoeuvres and Choulex, then loops north through Meinier around km 10 and over the highest ground, about 456 m, near Jussy at km 12 to 13 before turning south through Presinge around km 15 and Puplinge, where the file includes a short out-and-back of about 115 m on Route de Jussy near km 17.5. Halfway falls in Thonex, the route passes Chene-Bourg around km 22 and rolls back north through Vandoeuvres and Choulex to Vesenaz near km 31. From there it drops about 50 m to the lake between km 32 and 34 and runs flat along Quai de Cologny and Quai Gustave-Ador into the city, turns into Rue du Rhone, crosses the river just below the lake near km 39, makes a short loop north through the Paquis and returns along the lakefront quays to finish on the Pont du Mont-Blanc facing the Jet d'Eau. The Swiss championship directives give about 160 m of climb and 200 m of descent, and the terrain model agrees at roughly 150 m up, all of it in the rolling countryside of the first 32 km between about 420 m and 456 m. The 2026 map marks nine feed stations, near Choulex, Meinier, Presinge, Puplinge and Chene-Bourg, on the Route de la Capite, on the lakeside road at Cologny, on the Eaux-Vives lakefront and in the Paquis; pacers run for 3:00 to 5:00, and relay teams of four to six share the course and the 09:00 start.

Three decisions to make before race day

  1. Run six-hour pace from the gun, because the cut-offs leave almost no slack

The km 22 (3 h 10) and km 32 (4 h 35) cut-offs leave an even six-hour runner only about two minutes. If they run from the gun, about 12:10 at Chêne-Bourg and 13:35 at Vésenaz are the real deadlines.

    More detail

The terms put km 22 at 3 h 10 and km 32 at 4 h 35, which works out at roughly 8 min 36 per km, barely slower than the 8 min 32 per km that six hours needs over the whole distance, so an even six-hour runner clears each check by only about two minutes. The terms do not say whether the checks run from the gun, so a runner who needs a few minutes to reach the mat after 09:00 should treat about 12:10 at Chene-Bourg and 13:35 at Vesenaz as the real deadlines. Both checks come in the rolling countryside before the drop to the lake, where the flat finish cannot win back time already lost, and the broom wagon takes the bib of anyone it passes.

  2. Be in Geneva by Saturday 8 May to collect your bib

Bibs are issued only at the Jardin Anglais village on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027, with no race-day or postal option. Bring identification and the emailed voucher, or send someone with the voucher and a copy of your identity document.

Bibs are issued only at the Jardin Anglais village on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027, with no race-day pickup and no postal option; the hours are still to be announced. Bring identification and the voucher emailed about a week before, or send someone with the voucher and a copy of your identity document. On Sunday the start is out in the east of the city by Geneve-Eaux-Vives station, about 1.9 km from the finish and village by the Pont du Mont-Blanc, which is a short walk from Cornavin; the race page names Chemin Frank-Thomas while the 2026 map and file start about 300 m away on Route de Frontenex, so check the final instructions for the exact line.

  3. Decide on the cancellation guarantee when you enter

The 15 CHF cancellation guarantee can only be added at registration, and entries otherwise carry no refund or deferral. The fee rises from 109 CHF to 119 CHF after 9 March 2027, or sooner if the quota runs out.

    More detail

Entries are firm with no refund or deferral, and the 15 CHF guarantee, which refunds the full bib price for a documented illness, injury or pregnancy claimed by 12 May 2027, can only be added during registration. Without it the exits are a transfer to a named runner until 4 May 2027, with the payment settled between the two of you, or, only if the marathon sells out, a waiting-list release that refunds 85 percent of your price if someone takes the bib. The fee rises from 109 CHF to 119 CHF after 9 March 2027, or sooner if the Regular quota runs out.

Target finish time, including stops

The initial value is the first published start, not your assigned wave. Europe/Zurich.

Time limit: Six hours; the terms do not say whether from the gun or your own start

How this sheet applies the limit

The 2027 terms give the marathon six hours with two intermediate cut-offs, km 22 at 3 h 10 and km 32 at 4 h 35, enforced by a broom wagon that removes the bib of anyone it catches; beyond the limit there are no aid stations or medical cover and runners carry on along the pavements under normal traffic rules. The terms do not say whether these times run from the gun or from each runner's own crossing of the start: the official result is net time from mat to mat, while the Swiss championship overall ranking uses gross time. Only a single 09:00 start is published, marked subject to change and with no waves, so this sheet applies the six hours to the start time you enter; if the limit runs from the gun, it ends at 15:00 and the cut-offs fall at about 12:10 at km 22 and 13:35 at km 32.

A timing comparison, not a fitness assessment. Intermediate cutoffs, queues, weather and terrain are not modelled. Stops are spread evenly in the illustration; actual checkpoint times will differ.

Registration for 2027 is open online in four price phases, each ending at a date or when its bib quota runs out: Starter at 89 CHF and Early Bird at 99 CHF are already sold out, Regular at 109 CHF runs until 9 March 2027 and Last Chance at 119 CHF follows, and the terms close all entries at 23:59 on 6 May 2027 or sooner if the field fills, with no late entry on site. Runners must turn 18 in 2027 (born 2009 or earlier), and Swiss and Liechtenstein nationals are entered automatically in the 2027 Swiss Marathon Championships. Entries carry no refund or deferral unless the optional 15 CHF cancellation guarantee is bought at registration; a place can be passed to a named runner until 23:59 on 4 May 2027 for a 15 CHF fee paid by the new runner, and only if the race sells out can a bib be released to the waiting list for an 85 percent refund once someone takes it. Bibs are collected only at the event village in the Jardin Anglais on Friday 7 or Saturday 8 May 2027 against identification and the voucher emailed about a week before; there is no Sunday pickup and nothing is posted, a third party may collect with the voucher and a copy of your identity document, and the opening hours will be announced in 2027.
