Read the full course description

One loop on closed roads, measured to AIMS standards under the Hamburg athletics association, starting and finishing on Karolinenstrasse beside Hamburg Messe; the course record is 2:03:46. The Start 1 field runs about 340 m south down Karolinenstrasse to the Holstenglacis junction by U Messehallen, where the Start 2 field joins after about 330 m down Bei den Kirchhoefen; from there both run the same route by Glacischaussee and Millerntorplatz to the Reeperbahn at km 1.3, then Koenigstrasse, Hollaendische Reihe and Bernadottestrasse west through Altona and Ottensen to Othmarschen, and back east on the Elbchaussee from about km 6.7, through Palmaille at km 9 and down Breite Strasse to the Fischmarkt at km 10.3. The harbour stretch follows St. Pauli Hafenstrasse past the Landungsbruecken to Baumwall at km 12, skirts the Speicherstadt and HafenCity, runs through the western bore of the Wallring tunnel at km 14.1 to Ballindamm, Jungfernstieg and the Kennedybruecke between the two Alster lakes at km 16.4, and follows the east shore of the Aussenalster by Schwanenwik and Schoene Aussicht to km 19.5. Sierichstrasse leads north to the south edge of the Stadtpark at km 22 to 24, then Barmbek and City Nord at km 26 to 28 bring the field to the northernmost point at Am Hasenberge in Ohlsdorf at km 30.6, where the Maienweg turns it back for the last 12 km: Alsterkrugchaussee, Rathenaustrasse and Bebelallee, Hudtwalckerstrasse through Winterhude at km 35.5, Eppendorfer Landstrasse, Eppendorfer Baum, the Klosterstern at km 37.3 and the Harvestehuder Weg along the west shore to km 39, then Mittelweg, Dammtordamm at km 40.6, Gorch-Fock-Wall and Sievekingplatz to the finish. The organizer calls the course almost flat with small ramps; terrain-model heights on the TrailSplits line give about 165 m of gain in total, with the highest ground (about 35 to 44 m) on the Altona and Ottensen stretch from km 4 to 8, a drop of about 30 m from the Elbchaussee to the harbour by km 12, harbour and Alster level (3 to 10 m) to about km 20, rises of 10 to 15 m through Winterhude, the Stadtpark and City Nord, and a climb of about 10 m over the last 2 km from the Alster to the Messe. Refreshment stations stand on the right-hand side every 5 km with water, ESN electrolyte drink and cooling tubs, adding bananas from km 10, gels from km 20 and cola from km 25; massage points are at km 35 and 37.5, portable toilets at every kilometre marker, and pacers run for 3:00 to 5:00 in 15-minute steps.

Three decisions to make before race day

  1. Enter by transfer and settle your finish time before registration closes

Places are sold out, so a 2027 place comes as a transfer made by a registered runner for 25 euro. The code arrives by email within minutes; beware private-sale fraud. Your declared finish time sets your block, fixed after registration closes.

    More detail

The registration platform lists runner places as sold out and new entries need a coupon code that cannot be bought, so a 2027 place comes as a transfer from a registered runner, made by that runner through the user account or Manage Registration for a 25 euro fee until the registration closing date. The organizer reports fraud in private sales: the transfer code arrives by email within minutes, so be wary of anyone asking you to wait a day, and pay by a method you can reverse. The expected finish time on the entry decides your block, A to L on Karolinenstrasse from 08:30 or M to Q on Bei den Kirchhoefen from 09:00, and neither the time nor the block can change after the registration deadline.

  2. Collect your bib on Friday or Saturday, or book the Sunday slot now

Collect at the Expo in Hall A3 on Friday 12:00 to 19:00 or Saturday 09:00 to 19:00 with photo identification and your confirmation. Sunday pickup needs a 10 euro slot booked in advance, or send a friend with the authorisation form.

    More detail

Bibs are handed out at the Expo in Hall A3 of Hamburg Messe on Friday 23 April 12:00 to 19:00 and Saturday 24 April 09:00 to 19:00, with photo identification and the registration confirmation, and nothing is posted. Sunday pickup exists only as a 10 euro slot booked in advance, and only a booked slot is guaranteed; otherwise send a friend with the emailed authorisation form. On race morning the bag drop in Hall B6 opens at 07:00, Start 1 blocks fill from 07:30 and Start 2 blocks from 08:00.

  3. Run the first 10 km for the whole race, not for the crowd

The highest ground, about 40 m, comes by km 5, then the course drops about 30 m to the harbour: do not bank time on it. Pace by the kilometre markers in the Wallring tunnel at km 14.1 and keep something for the last 2 km uphill.

    More detail

The highest ground comes early: the Reeperbahn, Koenigstrasse and Bernadottestrasse climb to about 40 m by km 5 and stay there along the Elbchaussee to km 8, then the course drops about 30 m to the Fischmarkt and the harbour. Banking time on that descent costs more than it saves, because the long flat middle along the harbour and the Alster runs to km 20 and the last 2 km rise again from the Alster to the Messe. A watch can lose satellite signal in the Wallring tunnel at km 14.1, so pace by the kilometre markers there; gels start at km 20 and massage points stand at km 35 and 37.5.

Target finish time, including stops

The initial value is the first published start, not your assigned wave. Europe/Berlin.

Time limit: Six hours after the last runner crosses the start, so about 15:15; plan from your own block

How this sheet applies the limit

The organizer ends the marathon six hours after the last runner crosses the start line; timing is by the mika tag on the back of the bib and net time needs every mat. Start 1 sends blocks A to L from 08:30 to about 09:00 and Start 2 sends blocks M to Q from 09:00 to about 09:15, so the course closes at about 15:15; the 2026 timetable, with the same start window, planned the last marathon runner at the finish at 15:13 and reopened roads behind that six-hour pace. The closing time depends on when the last runner crosses, so this sheet does not invent a fixed closure or give each runner a six-hour allowance; plan your target from the start of your own block. No intermediate cut-offs are published; a runner who stops can ride an ambulance at the back of the field or take the U-Bahn to the finish.

A timing comparison, not a fitness assessment. Intermediate cutoffs, queues, weather and terrain are not modelled. Stops are spread evenly in the illustration; actual checkpoint times will differ.

The 2027 registration platform says runner places are sold out and takes new entries only with a coupon code that cannot be bought, so the way in is a transfer from a registered runner; the same page still carries some 2026 wording, so check it before arranging a transfer. The place holder transfers the entry through the user account or Manage Registration, the new runner receives a transfer code by email within minutes, and the 2027 terms allow a substitute until the official registration closing date for a 25 euro service fee; booked extras are cancelled and refunded, and the organizer warns of fraud in private transfer sales. Cancellation is free only in the first two weeks after registering; the optional cancellation insurance costs 13.90 euro up to the 100 euro price level and 16.90 euro from the 110 euro level, but the 2027 fee itself is not shown now that entry is closed. Runners must be 18 or older. Bibs are collected at the Marathon Hamburg Expo in Hall A3 of Hamburg Messe on Friday 23 April 2027, 12:00 to 19:00, or Saturday 24 April, 09:00 to 19:00, against photo identification and the registration confirmation, and a friend may collect with the authorisation form sent with the confirmation; race packs are never posted. Race-day pickup on Sunday 25 April exists only as a 10 euro time slot booked in advance through the user account or Manage Registration.
