What to expect on the course

  • Over the Tromsø Bridge at km 1.5 and back at km 31, the high points at about 40 m
  • Past the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsdalen near km 2
  • South along the Tromsøysundet shore past Sandvika to a turn at about km 16
  • West across Tromsøya past Telegrafbukta at km 36 to a second turn near km 37
  • Kilometre boards count down from 42 to the finish

The map follows the organizer's 2026 course from Prostneset to Stortorget; the organizer says 2027 may bring minor changes. The height profile follows the ground under the line, so it leaves out the Tromsø Bridge deck, which tops out at about 40 m.

Read the full course description

A road course of two out-and-back arms from Prostneset on Tromsø harbour, on a route the organizer, an AIMS member, has measured and certified. The first kilometre runs through the centre past Stortorget and climbs onto the Tromsø Bridge (Tromsøbrua), which crosses the sound to Tromsdalen and the Arctic Cathedral near km 2. The route then follows Solstrandvegen and the shore road south along the mainland side of Tromsøysundet, through Tromsøsvingen at about km 9 and past Sandvika near km 15 to a turn at about km 16, and comes back the same way to recross the bridge around km 31. Back on the island it passes Stortorget in Sjøgata at km 32, with 10 km to go, heads south-west through the town and out along the western shore past Telegrafbukta at km 36 to a second turn near km 37, then retraces to the finish on Stortorget. The organizer's 2026 profile shows 239 m of climbing, with the high points of about 40 m on the bridge at km 1.5 and km 31 and rises of about 30 m around km 10 to 11 and km 21 to 22. Drink stations with water, sports drink and bananas come roughly every 5 km, the Red Cross has a post every 5 km, and the kilometre boards count down from 42.

Three decisions to make before race day

  1. Reach Stortorget by 00:45, not just the finish by 02:00

Even 5 h 30 pace reaches the Stortorget check at km 32 only about three minutes before 00:45, so a runner near the limit needs a quicker first 32 km.

    More detail

The 5 h 30 limit allows about 7 min 49 per km, but anyone not past Stortorget in Sjøgata by 00:45, with 10 km left at about km 32, is stopped. On the 2026 start of 20:30 that check comes 4 h 15 into the race, so even limit pace reaches it only about three minutes early, straight after the second climb over the bridge.

  2. Plan the whole day around an evening start

Start 20:30 (2026) and finish closing 02:00: collect your bib on Friday 18 June, or on race day from 10:00, and hand in your bag at the harbour terminal early, from 19:30.

    More detail

The 2026 marathon started at 20:30 and the finish closes at 02:00, so eat and rest for a night race. Race-day bib pickup at the MSM Expo runs until 21:00, but Friday 18 June, 10:00 to 20:00, avoids a late rush. Marathon bags go to the harbour terminal from 19:30, where the organizer warns of long queues, and showers at Gyllenborghallen stay open until 02:30.

  3. Save effort for the second bridge crossing and carry your own extras

The bridge at km 31 is the last climb, stations are about every 5 km and help from spectators is not allowed, so carry any gels you need.

    More detail

The organizer's profile peaks at about 40 m on the Tromsø Bridge at km 1.5 and again at km 31, the last real climb, just before the 00:45 check, with 239 m of climbing in all. Drink stations are only about every 5 km, and taking food or drink from spectators is not allowed, so carry any gels you rely on.

Target finish time, including stops

20:30 is the 2026 marathon start at Prostneset; the organizer says the 2027 programme will be published in winter 2027. Replace it when the programme appears. Europe/Oslo.

Time limit: 5 h 30; the finish closes at 02:00, after midnight; gun or chip basis not stated

How this sheet applies the limit

The organizer allows 5 h 30 for the marathon and closes the finish at 02:00, after midnight, early on Sunday 20 June; it does not say whether the limit is gun or chip time, but 02:00 is exactly 5 h 30 after the 2026 start of 20:30. Runners who have not passed Stortorget in Sjøgata, with 10 km to go at about km 32, by 00:45 are stopped and listed as DNF. The sheet applies both the 5 h 30 and the 02:00 close to the start you enter, but not the 00:45 point.

A timing comparison, not a fitness assessment. Intermediate cutoffs, queues, weather and terrain are not modelled. Stops are spread evenly in the illustration; actual checkpoint times will differ.
