One RFEA-measured loop of 42.195 km on roads closed to traffic, starting and finishing on the Plaza del Pilar. After a short loop by the Basilica it runs east along the Paseo Echegaray y Caballero to a hairpin at km 2 and back to the Pilar by km 4, then down the Paseo de la Independencia to a turn at Plaza de Aragon and back. It crosses the Ebro on the Puente de la Almozara at km 8, circles the Expo site past the Torre del Agua at km 10 and returns over the Puente del Tercer Milenio to the bullring at km 13. The organizer names the rise from Tenor Fleta up the Paseo de Cuellar to the Canal Imperial, now at km 17, as the hardest stretch but gives no climb figure. Km 18 to 22 loop through the Parque Grande with two short out-and-backs, then turns on Avenida de San Jose and Miguel Servet. From km 32 the Echegaray is run to the hairpin again at km 33, with an out-and-back onto the Puente de Hierro, before the Puente de Piedra, Sobrarbe and the Puente de Santiago; a second Independencia turn near km 41 precedes the finish. Water every 5 km, sports drink from km 15, fruit and nuts from km 20, pacers 3:00 to 4:15.

Three decisions to make before race day

  1. Pace the first half against the 11:00 halfway clock

Cut-offs are clock times from the 08:30 start at 7:05 per km: halfway by 11:00, km 30 by 12:05, km 35 by 12:40. Starting from a back corral costs minutes against them.

    More detail

All three cut-offs are clock times set by a 7:05 per km closing pace from the single 08:30 start: halfway by 11:00, km 30 by 12:05, km 35 by 12:40. Corrals are ordered by target time, so a runner near the limit starts at the back and loses the minutes it takes to reach the line. The slowest pacer runs 4:15, so anyone slower paces alone.

  2. Hold back on the km 17 climb and the turns that follow

The hardest climb now comes at km 17, followed by the Parque Grande out-and-backs and hairpins on the Echegaray at km 2 and 33. Keep effort even there.

    More detail

The organizer moved the hardest stretch, the rise from Tenor Fleta up the Paseo de Cuellar to the Canal Imperial, from km 32 to km 17 so legs meet it fresh. Straight after it come the Parque Grande loops with two out-and-backs, and the map shows hairpins on the Echegaray at km 2 and 33 and turns on Independencia near km 5 and 41. No climb figure is published.

  3. Collect bib and gels at the Hotel Hiberus on Friday or Saturday

Bibs and gels only at the Hotel Hiberus on Friday 16 or Saturday 17 April; nothing on race day, and gels are not handed out on course.

    More detail

Bibs are handed out only at the Hotel Hiberus, Paseo de los Puentes 2, on Friday 16 April 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 17 April 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, never on race day. The gels come in that bag, not at aid stations, so plan to carry them. A friend may collect with a copy of your ID and your written authorisation.

Target finish time, including stops

The initial value is the first published start, not your assigned wave. Europe/Madrid.

Time limit: 5 hours; the rules do not say whether they run from the gun or your start crossing

How this sheet applies the limit

The rules give 5 hours to finish and close three checkpoints at fixed clock times: halfway at 11:00, km 30 at 12:05 and km 35 at 12:40, set by a closing pace of 7:05 per km. Staff or the Policia Local may withdraw runners behind that pace, and the organizer may close the finish and timing once the 5 hours are up. The rules do not say whether the 5 hours run from the 08:30 gun or from your own start crossing, so this sheet shows no closing clock.

A timing comparison, not a fitness assessment. Intermediate cutoffs, queues, weather and terrain are not modelled. Stops are spread evenly in the illustration; actual checkpoint times will differ.
