Camino Aragonés: Somport to Puente la Reina

The Camino Aragonés, the Way of St James over the Pyrenees at the Somport pass, in the Federación's six stages: down by Canfranc to Jaca, west by Arrés and Artieda, above the Yesa reservoir by Ruesta and Undués de Lerda, into Navarra at Sangüesa, then by Monreal and Obanos to Puente la Reina, where it joins the Camino Francés.

Best season: March to October. The paths can be walked outside summer, but the pilgrim hostels decide the season. Jaca's municipal hostel opens from March to October, Arrés's is closed from November to March, Monreal's closes at the end of October, Sangüesa's municipal hostel on 31 October, and Obanos's in mid-October. Most private hostels in Puente la Reina close between 12 October and 1 November. Open all year: the Jaca Hostel, Artieda, both hostels in Undués de Lerda, a pension in Sangüesa, Tiebas and the parish hostel in Puente la Reina. Before you go

Six official stages of 17.5 to 37.7 km. Stage 5, Undués de Lerda to Monreal, is 37.7 km and about 9 hours, so every plan splits it at Sangüesa, 10.6 km in, as most walkers do: that makes seven days. Several pilgrim hostels close in October (Obanos, Sangüesa, Monreal and most private ones in Puente la Reina), and Arrés is closed from November to March: pick your dates to see which are open. How these plans are made

Days end at a stage end with a refuge or a village, or in a village the route passes through. Walking times are measured on each stage's mapped line by our route analysis (terrain heights and our hiking-time model, moving time only): no time is published for these stages.Outside Switzerland our walking times often run short of the times route operators publish; treat them as optimistic. Running times use 7.5 km/h plus one hour per 700 m of climb: a steady reference, not a prediction. Daylight is sunrise to sunset where the day starts; the time left is for breaks, meals and delays.Refuge dates come from the operator's own pages; when they are not published, we say so. For villages we count the places to stay OpenStreetMap lists; we have not checked which are open. A plan is not a booking: reserve every night before you commit to these day lengths.

Huts and stays, stage by stage

Where each stage ends, the 2026 and 2027 seasons the operator publishes, and how to book. Read from the operators' pages on 13 October 2026; each stage page shows the sources and the grade profile.

Pilgrim hostels, many closing in October

The traditional pilgrim hostels take no bookings: one night, in order of arrival, walkers first, with a pilgrim credential, which the Gobierno de Navarra calls the only requirement for a hostel in Navarra. Several are seasonal: Jaca's municipal hostel opens from March to October, Arrés's from April to October, Monreal's from early March to the end of October, Sangüesa's municipal hostel from Holy Week to 31 October, and Obanos's Usda from Holy Week to mid-October. The private hostels differ: Artieda advises booking, the Jaca Hostel and Undués de Lerda's youth hostel take bookings, and in Puente la Reina Estrella Guía takes only booked guests from November. In winter the beds that stay open are the Jaca Hostel, Artieda, Undués de Lerda, Sangüesa's pension, Tiebas and the Padres Reparadores in Puente la Reina, but with Arrés closed there is no listed bed at the end of stage 2.

Stage 1: a closed footbridge and a sunken track

The Federación's alerts for Somport to Jaca say the footbridge below the Canfranc reservoir is half collapsed and closed to use, and that the track has partly sunk after rain. It gives no detour, and we could not tell where the footbridge is on our line or which way round it goes, so our line is unchanged. Follow the signs on the spot and ask locally, in Canfranc or Jaca, before you walk this part. Federación stage 1 alerts, read 13 October 2026.

Federación: stage 1, Somport to Jaca

Pilgrim hostels that close for the winter

Jaca's municipal hostel is open from March to October, Arrés's is closed from November to March, Sangüesa's municipal hostel closes on 31 October, Monreal's at the end of October and Obanos's Usda in mid-October. In Puente la Reina, Jakue closed on 12 October 2026, Gares and Santiago Apóstol close on 31 October and Albergue Puente on 1 November. Open all year: the Jaca Hostel, Artieda, both hostels in Undués de Lerda, the Pensión el peregrino in Sangüesa, Tiebas, the Padres Reparadores and Estrella Guía (booked guests only from November). Federación hostel listings, read 13 October 2026.

Federación: the Camino Francés por Aragón and its hostels

How the pilgrim hostels work

The traditional hostels are for pilgrims on foot, by bike or on horseback who carry a credential. They take no advance bookings, fill in order of arrival, give walkers priority, and let you stay one night unless you are ill. Private hostels set their own rules: several take bookings. In low season, phone the Refugio de Ruesta first. Federación hostel rules, read 13 October 2026.

Federación: hostel rules

Stage 5: the long day and its two ways

Undués de Lerda to Monreal is 37.8 km. Most walkers stop in Sangüesa, 10.6 km in, which leaves about 27 km to Monreal. After Sangüesa the Federación gives two ways that meet again on the way down to Izco: over the hill by Rocaforte, which our line takes, or on the flat through the Foz de Lumbier, a variant with a dark tunnel where a torch is essential. Federación stage 5, read 13 October 2026.

Federación: stage 5, Undués de Lerda to Monreal

Where the Camino Aragonés ends

The Federación ends the route at the hermitage of San Salvador in Obanos, where it meets the Camino from Roncesvalles, not in Puente la Reina as is often said. After Tiebas it gives two options to Enériz, by Campanas and Biurrun or by Muruarte de Reta and Olcoz; our line takes the first, and runs on to Puente la Reina. Turismo de Navarra counts 56 km from Sangüesa to Puente la Reina. Federación stage 6, read 13 October 2026.

To the start at Somport

The line starts at the pass, by the bus stop "Somport - Douane". We did not check which buses reach it: the Gobierno de Aragón's T01 timetables for the Jacetania (valid from 1 October 2026) are the place to look. Jaca has a station and is the hub of the valley.

Gobierno de Aragón: T01 bus timetables (PDF)

On the way

La Burundesa's Pamplona to Jaca bus runs once a day each way and stops at Monreal, Yesa, Tiermas, Escó, Sigüés and Berdún, but it may not carry you between Pamplona and the Navarra stops, so it only links Pamplona with the Aragón villages; its timetable file is dated February 2022. The Aragón line T01-12 runs from Tiermas by Escó and Sigüés to Jaca twice a day and back once, and Artieda has a bus on Thursdays only. We could not read a timetable for Sangüesa.

Home from Puente la Reina

La Estellesa's Pamplona to Logroño line serves Puente la Reina / Gares and Obanos (Empalme); we did not read its times. From Puente la Reina the Camino Francés goes on west to Estella and Santiago.

Route & sources

Route map & sources

The Federación Española de Asociaciones de Amigos del Camino de Santiago lists the Camino Aragonés (its "Camino Francés por Aragón") in six stages from the Somport pass: Jaca, Arrés, Artieda, Undués de Lerda, Monreal and Obanos, 162.23 km on its main route. It publishes no stage times: its pages give each stage's km only, shown with ours on every stage. Officially the route ends at the hermitage of San Salvador in Obanos, where it meets the Camino from Roncesvalles; this page ends at Puente la Reina, where most walkers end it, 2.98 km on by the Federación's Navarra table. Our line is 163.5 km, on OpenStreetMap relations 2163936 and 2163937 (from the planet of 11 October 2026), cut at the six stage ends: 30.7 km against the Federación's 31.4 on stage 1, 25.1 against 25.24, 17.5 against 17.67, 21.7 against 21.85, 37.7 against 37.8, and 30.8 km on stage 6 against 28.27 to Obanos. The two mapped parts do not meet in Artieda, so our router joins them through the village, about 0.5 km. Where the Federación gives two ways, the line takes the hill route by Rocaforte after Sangüesa, not the Foz de Lumbier variant, and after Tiebas the option by Campanas, Biurrun and Úcar, not the one by Muruarte de Reta and Olcoz. Our climb is measured on terrain heights.
