The old King's Road over the Dovrefjell and the last part of the Gudbrandsdalsleden pilgrim way, from Dovre church to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, in the national pilgrim centre's fourteen days: Fokstugu, Hageseter and Kongsvoll on the fjell, down to Oppdal, through Rennebu, Meldal and Skaun, then over the Gaula to Trondheim.
Best season: Mid-June to mid-September. The pilgrim centre recommends 15 June to 15 September for the days over the Dovrefjell, and 15 May to 30 September from Oppdal north. Until about 15 June the way over the fjell is "technically closed": the bridges over the Hondyrju and Vesle Hondyrju go out about then, the rivers are full of meltwater and cannot be waded, snow lies late and can hide the waymarks, and the wild reindeer calve. Wait until 18 June for Hardbakken and Knutshø. Many lodgings close between August and mid-October: by 13 October 2026 Budsjord, Fokstugu, Hjerkinn Fjellstue, Ryphusan, Ry Gjestegård, Skaun's parish house and Lian Gård had closed for the year. Fourteen days, the pilgrim centre's own, of 3 to 26 km on our line; the first is a short arrival day up to Budsjord. Days 1 to 6 cross the Dovrefjell and Knutshø, where the lodges are the only beds and most open only in summer. From Oppdal north the trail runs through farmland and forest, with pilgrim hostels and farms. Every day ends at a stay, but many close in autumn: pick a date to check them. Stage 1: From Dovre church, whose milestone says 250 km to Nidaros, up to Budsjord: 3.4 km on our line, the pilgrim centre's 4 km arrival day. The climb to the fjell starts here, past an old church site with a St Olav's spring. The pilgrim centre publishes no time for any day. Budsjord opens only from 21 June to 15 August; outside that, sleep at Toftemo Turiststasjon, about 1.9 km off the trail north of Dovre.

Stage 2: From Budsjord up the King's Road onto the open fjell and over Hardbakken, the highest point between Dovre and Fokstugu, by the Allmannrøysa cairn: 13.2 km on our line, 14 km by the pilgrim centre. Near the end you cross the Hondyrju and the Vesl-Hondyrju. Their bridges go out about 15 June; before then the rivers cannot be waded. Because of snow and the reindeer calving, the pilgrim centre asks walkers to wait until 18 June; early in the season it suggests the Øverbygdsvegen from Dovre to Dombås and the old road from Dombås to Fokstugu instead.

Fokstugu Fjellstue, a farm and mountain lodge at about 1,000 m, 100 m from the trail.
Stage 3: From Fokstugu across the Dovrefjell, past burial cairns and trapping pits, to Hageseter: 20.6 km on our line, 21 km by the pilgrim centre. The climb comes early; then the trail passes lodges where you can stop. There are no food shops on the fjell. Dovrefjell Lodge at Furuhaugli, about 9 km on and 300 m off the trail, is open all year. The pilgrim centre's alternative day, Fokstugu to Hjerkinn in 26 km, is not mapped. Early in the season it suggests the drier "Tour de Dovre" cycle route from Fokstugu to Hjerkinn.
Stage 4: From Hageseter past the restored medieval houses at Vesle-Hjerkinn, Hjerkinn Fjellstue and Eysteinkyrkja, the pilgrim church at Hjerkinn (about 5 km on), then along the old King's Road over Hjerkinnhøe and down past Porten, the old border between the south and the north of Norway, to Kongsvold Fjeldstue: 17.3 km on our line, 17 km by the pilgrim centre. Kongsvold Fjeldstue, the state-owned mountain inn at the foot of the Dovrefjell; the trail goes through its yard, and Kongsvoll station is a few hundred metres on.
Stage 5: From Kongsvoll over the Knutshø massif to Ryphusan: 21.6 km on our line, 22 km by the pilgrim centre. The first 4 km run along the slope above the E6 in Drivdalen; then the restored Vårstigen climbs onto the fjell, and an old summer-farm road and then a car road lead down to Ryphusan. Fine, but it can be hard in bad weather, the pilgrim centre says. Wait until 18 June for the reindeer calving and the snow; before 10 June take the train from Kongsvoll to Oppdal, or the King's Road through Drivdalen. Ryphusan takes no bookings and opens only from about 10 June to 1 October; an Oppdal taxi fetches pilgrims there at an agreed time.
No booking No booking: drop-in for walkers on their own, first come, first served; groups are asked to stay elsewhere. 8 bunk places and 2 mattresses inside, and a tent with 4 camp beds. Unstaffed: bring a sleeping bag and a pillowcase; simple food is sold in the hut.

A summer farm (seter) in the Vinstradalen, below Knutshø, on the trail. A road reaches it, and an Oppdal taxi fetches pilgrims at an agreed time and brings them back the next day, the tour page says.
Stage 6: From Ryphusan down the Vinstradalen, past St Michael's chapel at Rise and Smegarden Camping (about 15 km), then through farmland to the Viking grave field and Oppdal church at Vang: 25.1 km on our line. The pilgrim centre gives 28 km, to the centre of Oppdal, 3 km below the church, where the shops, the hotels and the station are; our stage ends at the church. A long day but easy going, the pilgrim centre says. Granmo Camping, open all year, can break it.

The stage ends at Oppdal church at Vang, by the Viking grave field, 3 km above the centre, which has the shops, cafes, the hotels and the station. The trail goes on along the Rv 70 towards the centre and passes about 0.5 km from Vekve hyttetun and 0.9 km from Oppdal Gjestetun Hotell some 2.4 km after the church; to reach the station, follow the footpath and cycle path on into the centre.

Stage 7: From Oppdal church at Vang along the Rv 70 and north by the old King's Road (Gamle Kongeveg) through Rennebuskogen to Hæverstølen: 26.0 km on our line, the longest day. The pilgrim centre gives 22.5 km from the centre of Oppdal to Rennebuskogen. For a shorter day it names IMI Stølen, about 4 km from Oppdal, or Fagerhaug, about 12 km, where Oppdalsporten and Stugguhaugen are 1 to 2 km off the trail. Stage 8: From Rennebuskogen by the old King's Road towards Rennebu, partly on roads, partly through forest, to Stamnan: 19.4 km on our line, 20 km by the pilgrim centre. At Skjepphaugen you can take an easier way along the river Orkla, or climb by the trail to Slipran and on past the St Olav memorials at St. Olavskleiva. Just before Stamnan the mapped trail breaks for 154 m, and our router joins it on mapped roads: follow the waymarks there. Meslo Herberge, open all year, is 1.3 km before Stamnan.
km 0.0–0.1: Joined by our routing here; the waymarked route may differ.
Stage 9: From Stamnan by a climb with a view, then through farmland to Rennebu church and on to the farm Ry: 12.2 km on our line, 14 km by the pilgrim centre. Rennebu church marks 100 km to Nidaros, the last place you can join and still qualify for the Olavsbrev; the Gammelbua pilgrim information point is beside it. Ry has a pilgrim cafe; its guesthouse opens from 15 May to 15 September, and Nørgar Voll, about 600 m off the trail some 5.6 km after Stamnan, was open until 13 October 2026.
Stage 10: From Ry past old farms, crofts and churches, and the thousand-year-old farm Jorlia, to Meldal: 17.6 km on our line, 18 km by the pilgrim centre. Segard Hoel, open all year, is about 8.5 km on. Meldal has shops and a folk museum.
Stage 11: From Meldal by Løkken Verk, the old mining village, and Svorkmo to Gumdalen: 17.6 km on our line, 20 km by the pilgrim centre. Olskastet, a free resting house with no facilities, and the Skogheim pilgrim hostel are on the trail before Løkken Verk, which has a shop and beds. The Thamshavnbanen museum train runs from Løkken Verk to Svorkmo three days a week from late June to mid-August.
Stage 12: From Gumdalen through conifer forest and pasture, past the lake Solsjøen, to Skaun church, a stone church of about 1180: 20.0 km on our line and by the pilgrim centre. Midway the ground is boggy for a while, so expect wet feet. Both stays at Skaun close for the winter: the parish house after 15 September, Aunan Gård after 1 October.
Stage 13: From Skaun through farmland, past Husaby of the Kristin Lavransdatter novels, with the first view of the Trondheimsfjord, down by Buvika to Øysand at the mouth of the Gaula: 15.6 km on our line, 16 km by the pilgrim centre. Øysand Camping and Strandheimen Gjestehus are at the stage end.

By bus, train, ferry or car: 0.3 km with no walking route (see the stage's notes), not in the walking distance or time.
km 2.4–2.7: No walking route here: the official route crosses by bus, train, ferry or car. See the operator's description.
Stage 14: From Øysand over the Gaula and Skjefstadbakken, through the forest of Bymarka and down through Byåsen and Sverresborg, past the Kongesteinen and the Trøndelag folk museum, to Nidaros Cathedral: 24.0 km on our line, about 23.6 km of it on foot, 25 km by the pilgrim centre. About 2.4 km after Øysand our line crosses the Gaula by a summer boat crossing that OpenStreetMap maps there: we draw it as a dashed line of 0.3 km and count none of it as walking. The pilgrim centre's Oppdal to Trondheim tour does not mention the crossing. Its Svorkmo to Trondheim tour says you can take the Sundbåten, the river boat, here; the boat's own listing says it is for pilgrims who stay at Lerfald gård, and for groups on request. Neither gives a season, and we found no official word on whether it runs in October, or on another way over the river: book the boat with Lerfald gård, or ask the pilgrim centre, before you set off.
Days end at a stage end with a refuge or a village, or in a village the route passes through. Walking times are measured on each stage's mapped line by our route analysis (terrain heights and our hiking-time model, moving time only): no time is published for these stages.Outside Switzerland our walking times often run short of the times route operators publish; treat them as optimistic. Running times use 7.5 km/h plus one hour per 700 m of climb: a steady reference, not a prediction. Daylight is sunrise to sunset where the day starts; the time left is for breaks, meals and delays.Refuge dates come from the operator's own pages; when they are not published, we say so. For villages we count the places to stay OpenStreetMap lists; we have not checked which are open. A plan is not a booking: reserve every night before you commit to these day lengths.

Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Before you go
Prepare for the Kongeveien over Dovre
Arrange your stays, food and travel first, then check conditions again near departure.
Book your nights ahead
Most lodgings are small hostels and farms with few beds: book a couple of days ahead, earlier for a group, the pilgrim centre says. There is no common booking system, so book each place yourself. Ryphusan and Olskastet take no bookings; Svorkmo skytterhus gives its key by phone, and Lian Gård sends a key-box code with the booking. Outside the summer check each stay's season: by 13 October 2026, Budsjord, Fokstugu, Hjerkinn Fjellstue, Ryphusan, Smegarden, Langklopp, Ry, Ner-Grefstad, Skaun's parish house, Aunan Gård and Lian Gård had closed for the year. Open all year are, among others, Toftemo, Dovrefjell Lodge, Hageseter, Granmo, the Oppdal hotels, Hæverstølen, Gjesteheim Havdal, Meslo, Segard Hoel, the beds at Løkken Verk and Strandheimen.
When to cross the Dovrefjell
Until about 15 June the pilgrim way over the Dovrefjell is "technically closed", the pilgrim centre says (read 13 October 2026): the bridges over the Hondyrju and Vesle Hondyrju (day 2) go out about 15 June, the rivers cannot be waded before then, deep snow often lies into late June and hides the waymarks, and lodges may be shut. The wild reindeer calve on Hardbakken and Knutshø: wait until 18 June for days 2 and 5. Before 10 June take the train over the Dovrefjell, or from Kongsvoll to Oppdal. From Oppdal north you can start from about 15 May and walk until the end of September.
On day 14, about 2.4 km after Øysand, our line crosses the Gaula by a summer boat crossing, drawn dashed and not counted as walking. The pilgrim centre's Oppdal to Trondheim tour does not describe the crossing; its Svorkmo to Trondheim tour says the Sundbåten can take you over here, and the boat's listing (read 13 October 2026) says it is for pilgrims staying at Lerfald gård, and groups on request. No season is published, and we found no official word on whether it runs in October or on a walking way round: book the boat with Lerfald gård, or ask the pilgrim centre, before you go.
Even in midsummer the weather on the Dovrefjell can turn fast, with temperatures near 0 °C: check the forecast before you cross and carry warm clothes, gloves and a hat, the pilgrim centre says (Otta to Oppdal tour, read 13 October 2026). Dovre has the last food shop before the fjell; the next is in Oppdal, but most lodges on the way serve meals or sell food.
Many pilgrim lodgings open only in summer. On 13 October 2026 Budsjord, Fokstugu, Hjerkinn Fjellstue, Ryphusan and Smegarden on the Dovrefjell days, and Langklopp, Ry Gjestegård, Ner-Grefstad, Skaun's parish house, Aunan Gård and Lian Gård further north, were closed for the year; Kongsvold Fjeldstue gives no closing day in October. Each stay here shows its season, read on its listing on 13 October 2026.
Hjerkinn Fjellstue carries luggage over the Dovrefjell from Dovre (Toftemo or Budsjord) to Kongsvold Fjeldstue, ordered by 20:00 the day before. Kongsvold Fjeldstue carries it on to Ryphusan or Smegarden. The Dovrefjell pilgrim centre offers luggage transport from Kongsvold to Skaun, per piece and per day, ordered by 19:00 the day before, and Strandheimen carries it from Skaun to Øysand and on to Trondheim. Prices are on each listing (read 13 October 2026).
Rennebu church, on day 9, marks 100 km to Nidaros: the last place you can join the way and still get the Olavsbrev, the pilgrim certificate. At the pilgrim office by Nidaros Cathedral you get the Olavsbrev, your last stamps in the pilgrim passport and entry to the cathedral. The Dovrefjell pilgrim centre is in Eysteinkyrkja at Hjerkinn, on day 4, every day from 14 June to 13 September 2026; outside that by appointment.
Google Maps journey searches, not confirmed services. A mountain endpoint may need a booked transfer or an additional walk.
To the start at Dovre
Trains on the Dovrebanen between Oslo and Trondheim, and on the Raumabanen from Åndalsnes, stop at Dombås; only one train a day from Oslo stops at Dovre station. From Dombås take the local bus or a taxi to Dovre, 13 km; from Otta a local bus runs to Dovre, 34 km. Entur has the bus and train times.
SJ Nord's trains on the Dovrebanen stop at Hjerkinn, Kongsvoll, Oppdal and Berkåk in Rennebu; at Kongsvoll book your ticket ahead, or the train will not stop. AtB buses run from Oppdal to Støren and Trondheim (480), from Berkåk by Meldal to Orkanger (460), and in Skaun (310, 410, 505 and 511). AtB closed the Grut stop in Orkland from 30 September 2026 for roadworks; use the Stene stop instead.

Route & sources
Route map & sources
The national pilgrim centre (Nasjonalt pilegrimssenter, pilegrimsleden.no) publishes no fixed stages for this part of the Gudbrandsdalsleden, the pilgrim way from Oslo to Trondheim. Its tour proposals cover it in fourteen days: Dovre to Kongsvoll in four (4, 14, 21 and 17 km, by Hageseter), the last two days of Otta to Oppdal (22 and 28 km), and Oppdal to Trondheim in eight (22.5, 20, 14, 18, 20, 20, 16 and 25 km), 261.5 km in all. It publishes no stage times and no climb, so every time here is measured on our line. The line here is the trail on OpenStreetMap, six hiking relations of the Gudbrandsdalsleden (3917970, 3918309, 1671572, 5677571, 5697677 and 5659103) from the planet of 11 October 2026: 253.6 km, cut at the fourteen day ends, from Dovre church to Nidaros Cathedral. Ten of the fourteen days are within 1 km of the pilgrim centre's figure. Day 9, Stamnan to Ry, is 1.8 km shorter (12.2 km against 14), and three differ more: day 6 ends at Oppdal church at Vang, 3 km above the town centre where the pilgrim centre's 28 km end, so ours is 25.1 km; day 7 runs from that church to Hæverstølen, 26.0 km against the pilgrim centre's 22.5 km from the centre to Rennebuskogen; and day 11, Meldal to Gumdalen, is 17.6 km against 20. The pilgrim centre's alternative by Hjerkinn on days 3 and 4 is not mapped; our line takes the Hageseter days and passes Hjerkinn on day 4. At Stamnan (day 8) the mapped trail breaks for 154 m, and our router joins it on mapped roads. On day 14 our line crosses the Gaula past Øysand by a summer boat crossing, drawn as a dashed line and not counted as walking: the pilgrim centre's Oppdal to Trondheim pages do not describe it (see that day). Our climb is measured on terrain heights, so short steep steps are smoothed out.
