Bay of Naples: Capri, Ischia and Vesuvius, day by day
Day walks and runs from Naples, Sorrento or, from April to October, the islands themselves: across Capri over Monte Solaro, over Epomeo on Ischia, up Vesuvius and along the Sentiero degli Dei, each with a boat, train or bus at both ends.
Best season: October to May; winter works with a spare day for the sea. Mild on the coast in winter, but boats stop in rough seas (all three islands were cut off on 10 January 2026), and the Vesuvius crater path closes in orange weather warnings and for snow. Summer is hot for the climbs. Weather by month

The day routes
Each route follows signed trails: the CAI trails on Capri and Ischia and the national park's trails on Vesuvius, joined by short links through villages. Times are our estimates at a steady pace: walking 4 km/h plus an hour per 400 m up and per 800 m down; running 7.5 km/h plus an hour per 700 m up.

Where to stay
Choose one base
Book one bed and leave your luggage there. Buses reach many of the routes' starts and ends; the rest are a taxi ride.
Naples, by the port
The only base for all three days from November to March: boats to Capri and Ischia leave from Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa, and the Circumvesuviana to Pompei, for Vesuvius, from Garibaldi, a metro ride away.
Ischia Porto puts Epomeo a local bus away, and the direct Alilauro boat to Capri leaves at 10:45 every day, back at 16:50 (earlier boats from June to September): enough for the east of Capri. From Capri Marina Grande every Capri route is a bus ride or a walk, and the Alicost boat goes to Ischia at 09:50, back at 17:15 (daily from June, at weekends in April and May). Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast are days from Naples or Sorrento.
From April to October you can stay on one island and then the other: choose a second base in the planner, and the moving day uses the direct boat. In winter every island trip goes through Naples, so moving your bag gains nothing.
One ticket to book, a sea that decides, and paths that are steep in places.
Vesuvius crater: book online
The crater path needs a ticket bought online (€10, €8 reduced) for a timed entry. Last entry is 15:00 from November to February and 16:00 in March and October; the path closes in orange weather warnings and for snow and ice.
Winter storms stop the hydrofoils first, then the ferries: on 10 January 2026 Capri, Ischia and Procida were cut off for most of the day. Keep a spare day, and check the operators the evening before.
The Passetiello and the Migliara are steep and exposed, and slippery when wet (CAI grades them EE); the forts path has short exposed sections by the sea. Via Krupp is closed from November to April.
The north side of Epomeo above Casamicciola, where the landslide of November 2022 came down, is off-limits. CAI Ischia lists trail 501 over Epomeo as usable.

Source: TerraClimate 1991–2020 monthly averages. Averages for the area at each point’s elevation (4 km grid, corrected for height). Not a forecast or a report of current trail conditions. Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Daylight is for the 15th of each month. Hut, transport and park seasons are separate: check them for your dates.
Getting there
Arrive by air, travel by boat and train
Naples airport (NAP)
The airport is about 7 km from the central station and the port; airport buses and taxis take about half an hour. Sorrento is about 75 minutes further by the Circumvesuviana or by boat.
The Circumvesuviana runs from Naples (Porta Nolana and Garibaldi) to Pompei Scavi, for bus 808 to Vesuvius, and on to Sorrento; Trecase and Ottaviano, for the other Vesuvius routes, are on its other lines.

About these maps
Each route follows the signed trails as mapped in OpenStreetMap (the CAI trails on Capri and Ischia, the national park's trails on Vesuvius), with short links through villages. Distances and climbs are measured on our lines; CAI and the park publish their own, which can differ.
Official facts read on 19 September 2026; bus times from the SIGA timetables and the Horários do Funchal data, compiled 19 September 2026. Map data is a route reference, not confirmation of today's path, weather or opening.
