How these plans are made

Days end at a stage end with a refuge or a village, or in a village the route passes through. Walking times are the Consell de Mallorca's published times where it gives one, with our estimate beside it; a day that walks part of a stage gets a share of the stage's time by distance and climb. Running times use 7.5 km/h plus one hour per 700 m of climb: a steady reference, not a prediction. Daylight is sunrise to sunset where the day starts; the time left is for breaks, meals and delays.Refuge dates come from the operator's own pages; when they are not published, we say so. For villages we count the places to stay OpenStreetMap lists; we have not checked which are open. A plan is not a booking: reserve every night before you commit to these day lengths.

Huts and stays, stage by stage

Where each stage ends, the 2026 and 2027 seasons the operator publishes, and how to book. Read from the operators' pages on 18 September 2026; each stage page shows the sources and the grade profile.

Before you go

Prepare for the Tramuntana

Arrange your stays, food and travel first, then check conditions again near departure.

Choose your nights

Nine official stages from Port d'Andratx to Port de Pollença. From Deià onwards every stage ends at a Consell refuge; the western stages end in villages. Book the refuges first, then fit the stages to your days.

Book the refuges first

Can Boi, Muleta, Tossals Verds, Son Amer and Pont Romà are booked on the Consell's portal or through its booking unit (+34 971 173 700): up to three nights per stay, 2 to 120 days ahead. Winter 2026/27 dates are not published yet, so confirm each night. At Can Boi and Pont Romà the online form offers no meals; ask when you book.

Short winter days

In late December the sun sets around 17:30 in Sóller, and refuge doors close at 22:00 from November to March. Start long stages at first light: the Consell times stage 6 at 9 h 05 and stage 2 at 8 h 40.

Storms and ice on the high stages

Winter storms can bring heavy rain, and the highest ground between Tossals Verds and Lluc can be icy. Check the forecast and warnings for Mallorca before each day and carry a warm layer.

Stay on the waymarked route

Sections still in planning are not signposted, and the Consell takes no responsibility for passage limits there. Follow the waymarked GR 221 and check the stage page before you go. The refuges admit only guide dogs.

Closures and notices last checked 19 September 2026: Consell de Mallorca: open sections. Check them again before you set out.

Getting there

Connect your journey

Choose a stage or journey above to narrow the travel searches.

Google Maps journey searches, not confirmed services. A mountain endpoint may need a booked transfer or an additional walk.

Island buses from Palma

TIB buses link Palma with the stage towns: line 101 to Port d'Andratx (121 continues from Andratx to Sant Elm), 202 to Esporles and Estellencs, 203 to Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller, 312 from Lluc towards Inca, and 301 to Pollença and Port de Pollença. Winter timetables differ; line 231 along the coast runs in summer only.

Offline maps

Prepare each stage you will walk while you still have a connection, and test it offline before you leave the refuge or the village.

Keep your route and maps on your phone for places without a signal. For multi-day trips, prepare them in the installed TrailSplits app.

  1. Open this trail in the app. Install TrailSplits, then open this trail there. On iPhone, downloads in a browser may not be available in the installed app.
  2. Choose your route or stages. Choose Prepare offline above. Wait for the route and maps to finish downloading.
  3. Try it before leaving coverage. Switch offline, close and reopen the app, then use My Hikes to start navigation. Repeat for every part you will need.

About this map

The map follows the OpenStreetMap relations of the GR 221, cut at the nine stage ends the Consell de Mallorca publishes. It measures 148.3 km; the Consell's stage pages add up to 148.4 km. In Sant Elm, about 1.2 km of village streets joins stages 1 and 2; those streets are not part of the mapped route. Refuge pages and OpenStreetMap still use an older eight-stage numbering.

Official guidance and mapped-source comparison checked 18 September 2026. Map data is a route reference, not confirmation of today's path, weather or accommodation availability.
