The Zuiderzeepad, a loop round the old Zuiderzee from Enkhuizen, in Wandelnet's 27 stages: by Hoorn and Edam to Amsterdam, along the shore by Harderwijk to Kampen, up to Lemmer and Stavoren on the Frisian coast, over the Afsluitdijk and back through Den Oever and Medemblik.
Best season: All year. The Zuiderzeepad runs on dikes and through polders and can be walked all year; it is waymarked white and red in both directions. Some crossings are seasonal: the free Fietsbus over the Afsluitdijk locks does not run from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027, so stage 25 cannot then be crossed on foot; the Eemdijk–Eemnes ferry on stage 9 runs from March to October and never on Sundays; and the Enkhuizen–Stavoren ferry, a short cut across the IJsselmeer, ran from mid-April to 27 September in 2026. In the breeding season stages 3, 6 and 26 take Wandelnet's alternatives. Before you go

Twenty-seven stages, Wandelnet's own, from 8.3 km (Ermelo to Harderwijk) to 29.5 km over the Afsluitdijk, about 25 km of it on foot. The route is flat. Wandelnet lists few stays, and many stage ends are villages with buses only; trains reach Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Amsterdam, Nijkerk, Ermelo, Harderwijk, Nunspeet, Kampen and Stavoren, so the loop splits into shorter trips. Choose a plan, or pick your own start, finish and nights below.

Changing where you stay suggests a new number of days: the fewest that keep each day under 8 h of walking and in daylight, where a place to stay allows.
Choose your nights (26 nights)
Days end where the route has a stay, a camp or a village.
Stage 1: From Enkhuizen to Wijdenes on the Markermeer: 17.2 km, Wandelnet says; it publishes no times. Camping De Gouwe Stek, a farm campsite near Bovenkarspel, is about 1 km off the trail after 4 km.
A village on the Markermeer dike, with no station: buses only. De Appelhoek, a farm with camping, apartments and B&B rooms, is on the dike just past the stage end.
Or a room in the village. Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 2: To Scharwoude, through Hoorn with its station halfway: 15.9 km. Between Hoorn and Durgerdam (stages 2 to 5) the dikes are being rebuilt until mid-2027: expect long stretches on asphalt and no view of the Markermeer.
ScharwoudeTown or village
A small village. Wandelnet lists no stay here; Hoorn, passed earlier on the stage, has beds and a station.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 3: To Edam bus station: 16.8 km by the stage page (the overview card still says 18 km). Just past Schardam the path outside the dike is now a protected bird area all year: take Wandelnet's breeding-season alternative there; our line may still show the dike path. Wandelnet lists a campsite at Schardam.
EdamTown or village
The stage ends at Edam bus station. Wandelnet lists no stay in Edam; it names a campsite at Schardam, halfway along stage 3.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 4: From Edam bus station to Monnickendam: 13.2 km. Our line follows Wandelnet's current stage file. Dike works block the way between Edam and Volendam, and Wandelnet says there is no good walking alternative: until the works end (expected at the end of 2026) take the bus from Edam bus station on the Egbert Snijderplantsoen to Volendam centre, or walk this stage later. Our km and time still include that stretch. The Marken day loop (6 km) starts near here; it is not drawn.
MonnickendamTown or village
A small town with buses. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 5: To Durgerdam on the edge of Amsterdam: 16.4 km by the stage page (the overview card still says 17.6 km). Until the end of 2027 the route from Dijkeinde to Durgerdam follows the Trekvogelpad while the dike is rebuilt, so Uitdam and Holysloot are not reached. Our line follows that diversion.
DurgerdamTown or village
A village on the dike on the edge of Amsterdam. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 6: Into Amsterdam, across the IJ by ferry, to the Flevopark: 16.5 km. Wandelnet does not name the ferry line. In the breeding season take the alternative near the start. Wandelnet lists B&B Zeeburg by the Schellingwouderbrug, about 10 km in; the Stayokay hostel is about 2 km before the end.
A park in the east of Amsterdam, about 1.8 km from Amsterdam Muiderpoort station. The Stayokay Amsterdam Oost hostel is about 2 km before the stage end, by the trail.
Or a room in the village. Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 8: By Naarden to Blaricum: 20.3 km by the stage page (the overview card still says 19.6 km), 19.4 km on our line. Near Muiderberg the line takes a dike path that OpenStreetMap marks as closed and overgrown; it is on Wandelnet's own line, so follow the waymarks and any signs on the ground.
BlaricumTown or village
A village with buses. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 9: To Bunschoten-Spakenburg: 20.1 km, with the Eemdijk–Eemnes cable ferry. It runs in March and October from 13:00 to 18:00, in April and September from 06:30 to 20:00 and from May to August from 06:30 to 21:00, never on Sundays, and Wandelnet's stage PDF gives no times from November to February. Its PDF maps an alternative for when the ferry is not running; our line takes the ferry.
Bunschoten-SpakenburgTown or village
A town with buses. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 11: To Ermelo: 15.4 km. A footway through an estate on this stage is marked private on OpenStreetMap but is on Wandelnet's line: follow the waymarks.
ErmeloTown or village
A town whose station is about 1 to 1.5 km from the stage end. Wandelnet lists a B&B at the start of stage 12.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 16: From Kampen to Genemuiden: 18.5 km on the regular route. From 15 April to 15 October Wandelnet also offers a summer variant by Kampereiland and Mandjeswaard, 23.4 km, with two small self-service ferries (their own schedule says to 10 October); it is not drawn here.
GenemuidenTown or village
A small town on the Zwarte Water, with buses; stage 17 starts with the cable ferry across to Zwartsluis. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 17: To Vollenhove: 19.1 km, starting with the cable ferry across the Zwarte Water from Genemuiden to Zwartsluis (all year: weekdays 06:00 to 22:00, Saturdays 08:00 to 19:00, Sundays 09:00 to 19:00). The bridge at Kadoelen is closed until the end of November 2026: a temporary pontoon bridge takes walkers only on weekdays from 07:00 to 16:45, and not for 45 minutes from 8.45, 10.45, 13.45 and 16.45. At weekends and on holidays take Wandelnet's alternative along the Overijssels Havezatenpad. The Vollenhove day loop (6.5 km) is not drawn.
VollenhoveTown or village
A small town with buses. The De Oldenhof campsite is on stage 17, about 6 km in and 1 km off the trail.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Echtenerbrug and Delfstrahuizen, either side of the Tjonger, with buses. Camping Turfland on the Turfkade welcomes walkers, with a furnished caravan or room for your own tent.
Or a room in the village. Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 24: By Makkum to the Frisian head of the Afsluitdijk: 11.7 km. Wandelnet lists Hotel Afsluitdijk at the stage end.
AfsluitdijkTown or village
The Frisian head of the Afsluitdijk, between Zurich and Kornwerderzand: no village here, but Wandelnet lists Hotel Afsluitdijk; book it before you set off. From here the free Fietsbus carries walkers over the locks; it does not run from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
By bus, train or ferry: 4.7 km with no walking route (see the stage's notes), not in the walking distance or time.
km 3.9–4.5: No walking route here: the official route crosses by bus, train or ferry. See the operator's description.
km 7.1–10.1: No walking route here: the official route crosses by bus, train or ferry. See the operator's description.
km 28.3–29.4: No walking route here: the official route crosses by bus, train or ferry. See the operator's description.
Closed on set days: km 3.9–29.4 of stage 25. The free Fietsbus that carries walkers past the Afsluitdijk’s locks does not run from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027, and the dike cannot then be fully crossed on foot: the paid line bus 350 stops only at Monument Noord. Walk this stage outside the winter stop.
Stage 25: Over the Afsluitdijk to Den Oever: 29.5 km by Wandelnet, 29.7 km on our line, of which 4.7 km has no walking route: over the locks at Kornwerderzand, the 3 km west of them that Wandelnet crosses in one straight line, and the last 1.1 km past the Stevin locks into Den Oever. Walkers ride the free Fietsbus there: its stops are the Wadden Center at Kornwerderzand, Vismigratierivier, Breezanddijk Noord, Monument Noord and Den Oever (Robbenoordstraat), about 10 km apart in the middle; buses from the Noord-Holland side stop only at Den Oever and Kornwerderzand. It is free and takes about 20 people and 15 bikes. It does not run from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027, and the dike cannot then be fully crossed on foot; the paid line bus 350 stops only at Monument Noord. De Afsluitdijk expects the cycle path to open fully in the third quarter of 2027; Wandelnet says temporary cycle bridges are to be built in 2027. Our walking km and time leave the bus stretches out: 24.9 km on foot.
Den OeverTown or village
A village at the Noord-Holland end of the Afsluitdijk, with a bus station. Wandelnet lists no stay here.
Find your own accommodation; TrailSplits has not checked what is open.
Stage 27: Back to Enkhuizen: 24 km. Medemblik is a stop of the Hoorn–Medemblik steam tram. The route through the Enkhuizerzand has been changed (route changes PDF, 11 February 2026). Near Enkhuizen the line takes 50 m of a service road OpenStreetMap marks as private; it is on Wandelnet's line.
Days end at a stage end with a refuge or a village, or in a village the route passes through. Walking times are measured on each stage's mapped line by our route analysis (terrain heights and our hiking-time model, moving time only): no time is published for these stages.Outside Switzerland our walking times often run short of the times route operators publish; treat them as optimistic. Running times use 7.5 km/h plus one hour per 700 m of climb: a steady reference, not a prediction. Daylight is sunrise to sunset where the day starts; the time left is for breaks, meals and delays.Refuge dates come from the operator's own pages; when they are not published, we say so. For villages we count the places to stay OpenStreetMap lists; we have not checked which are open. A plan is not a booking: reserve every night before you commit to these day lengths.
Huts and stays, stage by stage
Where each stage ends, the 2026 and 2027 seasons the operator publishes, and how to book. Read from the operators' pages on 13 October 2026; each stage page shows the sources and the grade profile.

Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Before you go
Prepare for the Zuiderzeepad
Arrange your stays, food and travel first, then check conditions again near departure.
Book your nights; many ends have none
The Zuiderzeepad has no booking system: book each B&B, hotel or campsite directly. Wandelnet lists no stay at many stage ends, among them Scharwoude, Monnickendam, Durgerdam, Blaricum, Oosterwolde, Oudemirdum, Ferwoude and Den Oever, so plan to take a train or bus to a town for the night and back the next morning. The free Fietsbus on the Afsluitdijk takes about 20 people a trip; Enkhuizen–Stavoren ferry tickets cannot be refunded, and groups of more than 20 must book.
Crossing the Afsluitdijk
On stage 25, 4.7 km of the dike has no walking route, by the locks at Kornwerderzand and Den Oever. The free Fietsbus carries walkers and cyclists there, about 20 people and 15 bikes a trip. It does not run from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027: in that time the dike cannot be fully crossed on foot. De Afsluitdijk expects the cycle path to open fully in the third quarter of 2027 (Fietsbus page and news, read 13 October 2026).
Wandelnet's route changes, read 13 October 2026: the dikes between Hoorn and Durgerdam are being rebuilt until mid-2027; dike works block Edam to Volendam on stage 4, where Wandelnet advises the bus (expected until the end of 2026); stage 5 follows the Trekvogelpad from Dijkeinde to Durgerdam until the end of 2027; past Schardam on stage 3 the outer-dike path is a bird area all year; and the route through the Enkhuizerzand on stage 27 has changed.
Until the end of November 2026 the Kadoelerbrug is closed. A temporary pontoon bridge takes walkers only on weekdays from 07:00 to 16:45, and is out of use for 45 minutes from 8.45, 10.45, 13.45 and 16.45. At weekends and on holidays follow Wandelnet's alternative along the Overijssels Havezatenpad (Wandelnet notice of 13 April 2026, read 13 October 2026).
Stage 6 crosses the IJ in Amsterdam by ferry. Stage 9 uses the Eemdijk–Eemnes cable ferry, March to October and never on Sundays, with a mapped alternative when it is not running. Stage 17 starts with the Genemuiden–Zwartsluis cable ferry, which runs all year (Wandelnet stage PDFs, read 13 October 2026).
A passenger ferry that takes bikes crosses the IJsselmeer between Enkhuizen and Stavoren in about 80 minutes, three return trips a day in season, and splits the loop into two halves. In 2026 it sailed from mid-April to 27 September, with no service in October. NS day tickets are not valid on board, and tickets cannot be refunded (Rederij V&O's timetable, read 13 October 2026).
Wandelnet also publishes a summer variant of stage 16 by Kampereiland, 23.4 km with two small self-service ferries from 15 April to 15 October, and two day loops, at Marken (6 km) and Vollenhove (6.5 km). On Marken much of the dike path is closed for works until the summer of 2027, Rijkswaterstaat says (read 13 October 2026).
Google Maps journey searches, not confirmed services. A mountain endpoint may need a booked transfer or an additional walk.
To the start at Enkhuizen
Enkhuizen station is the end of the NS line from Amsterdam by Hoorn. The first stage starts about 0.8 km from the station, and the last stage ends at the same point.
Trains reach Hoorn (stage 2), Amsterdam (stages 6 and 7), Nijkerk, Ermelo, Harderwijk and Nunspeet (stages 10 to 13), Kampen (stage 15) and Stavoren, Hindeloopen and Workum on the Arriva line to Leeuwarden (stages 22 and 23). Most other stage ends are villages served by bus; Medemblik also has the steam tram from Hoorn.

Route & sources
Route map & sources
Wandelnet publishes the Zuiderzeepad as 27 stages, a loop from Enkhuizen of 479.5 km by its stage pages (its overview page says both 478 and 495 km). It publishes no stage times, only each stage's km, given with ours on every stage. The line here is the route on OpenStreetMap (superroute 1561342 and its 27 stage relations, from the planet of 11 October 2026): 480.4 km, cut at the 27 stage ends. Stages 4 and 5 and most of stage 25 follow Wandelnet's own current stage files, matched onto OpenStreetMap: stage 4 Wandelnet's current line by the Edam–Volendam dike works, stage 5 the diversion along the Trekvogelpad from Dijkeinde to Durgerdam (until the end of 2027). On stage 25, the Afsluitdijk, 4.7 km has no walking route: the free Fietsbus carries walkers past the locks at Kornwerderzand and Den Oever, and our walking km and times leave those stretches out. The summer variant 16a by Kampereiland and the two day loops at Marken and Vollenhove are official options not drawn here. The route is flat; our climb is measured on terrain heights.
Official guidance and mapped-source comparison checked 13 October 2026. Map data is a route reference, not confirmation of today's path, weather or accommodation availability.
