Eigergletscher to Alpiglen, under the Eiger north face
Alpiglen is a request stop: signal the train, or it does not stop. The last one down to Grindelwald leaves at 18:45. The restaurant at Eigergletscher is open to groups only until 31 October 2026, so carry your own food.
Six kilometres along the foot of the Eiger north face, from the railway station at Eigergletscher down to Alpiglen. It loses more than 700 m and climbs almost nothing, so it is walked downhill from the top station, with a train at each end and the wall above you the whole way.

How hard it is
Grade, and how long it takes
“Difficult sections are secured with ropes.” — Switzerland Tourism, Eiger Trail
| The operator's time | 1 h 55 (SchweizMobil) · 2 h (Jungfraubahnen) | SchweizMobil route 353 |
|---|---|---|
| Swiss signpost time | 1 h 59 | The official hiking-time method, on our line |
| At a running pace | 1 h 05 | Our estimate; the grade does not change because you run |
The two official sources differ a little on everything: 6 km with 100 m of climb and 820 m of descent (SchweizMobil) against 6.1 km with 78 m and 779 m (Jungfraubahnen). Our own line measures 5.9 km. Neither is wrong; they are different measurements of the same path.

Source: TerraClimate 1991–2020 monthly averages. Averages for the area at each point’s elevation (4 km grid, corrected for height). Not a forecast or a report of current trail conditions. Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Daylight is for the 15th of each month. Hut, transport and park seasons are separate: check them for your dates.

Season: July to October, as Switzerland Tourism gives it. Snow or weather can block or interrupt the path outside that.
Make it your day
Shorter, longer, or at a run
Walk it uphill
From Alpiglen up to Eigergletscher takes about 2 h 30 and turns the descent into a climb of some 780 m. Jungfraubahnen publishes both directions.
Carry on to Kleine Scheidegg
From Eigergletscher the path to Kleine Scheidegg adds an easy stretch with trains at the far end.
For runners
A fast descent that the Eiger Ultra Trail uses for exactly that. The rope-secured steps and the scree ask for care, and the grade does not change because you are running.

Route and sources
What we checked, and when
This walk is an official Swiss hiking route: Eiger Trail (Grindelwald (Eigergletscher) - Grindelwald (Alpiglen)) (SchweizMobil route 353). We publish our own line on OpenStreetMap, matched onto the official one and checked against it.
- Official line 5.98 km · ours 5.93 km (-0.9%)
- 95% of the official line is within 80.2 m of ours; the furthest point is 129.7 m
- Between km 1.77 and 2.15 our line runs up to 130 m from the official one — OpenStreetMap has no path where the official line runs, so ours takes the nearest mapped way
- Climb read from a 30 m terrain model along our line, smoothed; an operator's figure will differ
- Built on 2026-09-20
