By mid-October most are closed: out of season, contact each herberg before you count on a bed. Hesselhus Camping and the two B&Bs give no season on the pages we read. Before you go

No central booking: contact the herbergs

Hærvejen's herbergs are simple hostels with bunks, run by local hosts. There is no central booking: contact each one (the details are on haervej.dk's list). Bunks go in the order guests arrive; groups may say when they will come, and some herbergs can reserve a bed. A night costs 100 to 200 DKK, cash or MobilePay, and they normally open at 17:00. Bring your own sleeping bag and sheet. North of Viborg the herbergs lie further apart, and walkers must add other places to stay, haervej.dk says; south of Rødekro there are none.

Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Herbergs on the cycle route

haervej.dk lists the Thorning, Kragelund and Immervad herbergs for the cycle route only. Thorning's and Kragelund's are about 2 km from the walking route; Immervad's is by the bridge the walking route crosses on stage 28: ask the host whether it takes walkers.

Route changes

Frederikshavn Kommune is moving the walking route into Østervrå, on stage 2 (announced 10 June 2026, no date yet), and building a new Hærvejshjem there. Vejle Kommune runs a Hærvejen project round Jelling and Haraldskær until December 2026. Follow the waymarks where they differ from our line.

The Hirtshals branch

haervej.dk also publishes a start from Hirtshals: eight stages by Lønstrup, Blokhus and Fjerritslev to Løgstør, then Løgstør to Gatten and Gatten to Aars, where it joins this line. It is an official alternative, not drawn here.

haervej.dk publishes the Frederikshavn branch of Hærvejen as 30 hiking stages, from Frederikshavn to Padborg on the German border: 483.5 km added up, with an official stage time for each, shown beside ours on every stage. It publishes no climb. The line here is the 30 stage relations on OpenStreetMap (superroute 1792585, from the planet of 11 October 2026): 483.8 km, each stage cut at its relation's own end. Most stages are within 1 km of haervej.dk's figure. Stages 15 and 16 split differently, 15.8 and 17 km on our line against 19.4 and 13.4, but together they match (32.8 km); stage 25 is 12.5 km on our line against 10, and stage 17 is 13.8 against 15. Several stages end 1 to 2.6 km from the village they are named after: Thorning 2.6 km, Bindeballe about 2 km, Rødekro 1.8 km, Kliplev and Padborg 1.5 km, Vrads 1.3 km and Aars 1 km; each stage says so. The Hirtshals branch, haervej.dk's other start, is not drawn here. Our climb is measured on terrain heights.
