Five ways to hike Kungsleden

STF trail guide

A week in the north, four days beside Sarek, or a longer camping journey: pick the character of your trip first. STF’s trip guides suggest walking days and overnight stops; our map lets you explore the terrain section by section.

107 km 5–7 days

Abisko to Nikkaluokta

High valleys and a hut-to-hut introduction to the north.

Cabins & connections

STF cabins and mountain stations. The exit via Kebnekaise leaves the main Kungsleden at Singi.

Arrive by train at Abisko Turiststation; plan the seasonal bus from Nikkaluokta to Kiruna for your return.

Boat information

Plan your days: Abisko to Nikkaluokta

7-, 5- and 3-day starting plans on one connected summer walking route, with offline trip preparation.

102 km itinerary 5–6 days

Nikkaluokta to Saltoluokta

Mountain valleys, lakes and the approach to Saltoluokta.

Cabins & connections

Cabins and mountain stations. Allow for the Teusajaure crossing and the road-and-boat connection via Vakkotavare and Kebnats.

Reach Nikkaluokta via Kiruna. Saltoluokta connects by boat to Kebnats, then onward by bus.

Boat information

73 km 4 days

Saltoluokta to Kvikkjokk

Sarek views, open fell and lakes around Aktse.

Cabins & connections

Mountain cabins and stations, with boat crossings between walking sections. Build the day around boat availability.

Train to Gällivare, bus to Kebnats and boat to Saltoluokta. From Kvikkjokk, check connections via Jokkmokk and Murjek.

Boat information

180 km 9 days

Kvikkjokk to Ammarnäs

A quieter, more self-sufficient journey through the central fells.

Cabins & connections

Carry camping equipment for nights between accommodation. This is a hiking route with several boat crossings, not a missing bus connection.

Use Kvikkjokk and Ammarnäs as gateways, with Jäkkvik and Adolfström useful intermediate access points. Arrange required boats separately.

Boat information

78 km 6 days

Ammarnäs to Hemavan

A week among the broad valleys of Vindelfjällen.

Cabins & connections

STF cabins a day apart through Vindelfjällen.

Compare journeys to Ammarnäs and Hemavan, and check the current bus and onward travel connections before choosing direction.

Boat information

These choices overlap on the northern access route; their distances must not be added to calculate the length of a through-hike. Day counts are suggestions, not bookings or a guarantee of daily effort.

Source: TerraClimate 1991–2020 monthly averages. Averages for the area at each point’s elevation (4 km grid, corrected for height). Not a forecast or a report of current trail conditions. Snow at the high point is estimated with a simple snowpack model from these temperatures and precipitation, not observed; steep islands and high summits can hold more snow than it shows. Daylight is for the 15th of each month. Hut, transport and park seasons are separate: check them for your dates.

Prepare for Swedish Lapland

Before you go

Cabins or camping?

Start with the overnight stops in your chosen STF guide. In the central Kvikkjokk–Ammarnäs section, plan tent nights as well as the accommodation that is available.

Boats set the rhythm

Check crossings before fixing your walking days. Rowing boats, booked transfers and scheduled services have different arrangements; do not infer a walk across a lake from a GPX line.

Check boat arrangements

Food, weather and equipment

Choose resupply points from the section guide and check opening dates. Bring waterproof layers, insulation, navigation backup and enough food between shops.

STF mountain preparation

Snow & trail conditions

Explore Scandinavian satellite snow observations with model estimates in observation gaps. Check dates and uncertain areas before deciding on your walking days; this is not a snow-free guarantee or a forecast for your departure.

Getting there

Kvikkjokk to Ammarnäs

Use Kvikkjokk and Ammarnäs as gateways, with Jäkkvik and Adolfström useful intermediate access points. Arrange required boats separately.

Carry camping equipment for nights between accommodation. This is a hiking route with several boat crossings, not a missing bus connection.

STF access, accommodation & route notes

Google Maps opens a journey search, not a confirmed departure. Seasonal buses and boats may need separate operator checks; a nearby stop does not guarantee a usable trail approach.

Offline maps

Keep your route and maps on your phone for places without a signal. For multi-day trips, prepare them in the installed TrailSplits app.

  1. Open this trail in the app. Install TrailSplits, then open this trail there. On iPhone, downloads in a browser may not be available in the installed app.
  2. Choose and check each section. Use the map above and the official walking guide to check your route and connections. Confirm your section review, then choose Prepare offline. Wait for the route and maps to finish downloading.
  3. Try it before leaving coverage. Switch offline, close and reopen the app, then use My Hikes to start navigation. Repeat for every part you will need.

Saving a bookmark is not a map download. Storage can be cleared by your device; keep a backup map for remote trips.

Route & sources

STF describes Kungsleden as just over 450 km between Abisko and Hemavan. The overview shows 473.4 km of mapped tracks, including side routes, repeated paths and gaps. It is useful for exploring the area, but is not the standard through-hike. Use the 22 sections to compare terrain, then choose walking days around the stays and connections in your official trip guide.

Which route should I use for my trip?

Use the official STF guide for your chosen journey to check walking stages, stays and connections. Trip guidance was checked on 14 September 2026. The map includes access paths and side routes as well as parts of Kungsleden, so compare your selected section with that guide before downloading it. Sections with known gaps remain available for map exploration, not direct navigation.

Kvikkjokk–Ammarnäs combines walking, boat crossings and camping. Plan those connections when choosing your days. Summer and winter routes differ; this page is for summer hiking.

Satellite imagery shows the landscape. Switch on the separate snow layer for dated observations and model estimates. Closures and restrictions provide partial local information; check current reports for your journey.
