Winter hiking in Switzerland
Switzerland signposts walking paths for the winter, marked with pink signs and kept by the resorts and villages. Here are 23 of them in 6 destinations, from the official list: each with its route, climb, walking time and difficulty, a map and a free GPX.
Zermatt
Six routes round the car-free village and from the Gornergrat railway and the Sunnegga lifts, between 1,600 and 2,800 m, below the Matterhorn.
Saas-Fee and the Saas valley
Four routes from Saas-Fee and the valley floor, from forest paths to the high Britannia hut line and the Mattmark reservoir.
Aletsch Arena
Five routes on the car-free terraces of Riederalp and Bettmeralp, from Moosfluh down to Riederalp, and along the valley at Fiesch.
St. Moritz and the Upper Engadine
Three routes on the high valley floor: past the lakes from St. Moritz to Maloja, along the river meadows from Samedan to La Punt, and out and back from Morteratsch station.
Arosa
Three routes from the resort at the head of the Schanfigg valley: to the Schwellisee, up to Prätschalp and through the Arlenwald.
Rigi
Two routes on the Rigi above Lake Lucerne, reached by cog railway or cable car: a lake-view walk down from Rigi Kulm and the panorama path between Rigi Scheidegg and Rigi Kaltbad.
Good to know
- Open or not is decided each day. Paths open, close and are prepared with the snow, and lifts and mountain railways keep winter timetables. Each destination page links to the operator's own report.
- The days are short. In mid-January the sun is up from about 8:00 to 17:00 on a flat horizon, less in deep valleys. The walking times are the source's, without stops.
- These are walking paths, not snowshoe routes or ski runs. Snowshoe routes and ski touring are not on this page.
