Good: the typical weather suits walking. Mixed: expect some wet, cold or dark days. Poor: most days are unsuitable, or the trail is outside its published season. Temperatures are the typical day and night at the lowest point; rain is the wetter of the low and high point.
Each guide's month is rated from TerraClimate 1991–2020 averages at its lowest and highest point, corrected for height, with weather stations as a check (Pico do Areeiro and Funchal on Madeira). Rain, cold, snow at the high point and daylight all count. A published season, such as a national park that closes, overrides the climate. The ratings are planning aids: check the forecast and the official notices before you go.
Compare any trails side by side for a month or for your own dates, with the forecast.
